How long does a tar & chip driveway last?

A hard-wearing tar & chip driveway

On a sound base, a well-laid tar and chip driveway lasts many years of normal use. Looking after it is simple.

Lifespan

With a proper base and quality install, expect a long service life, comparable to other bitumen surfaces. The biggest factor is the base and the install, not the surface, which is why the installer matters most.

Simple maintenance

  • Sweep occasionally to clear leaves and debris.
  • Rinse now and then; a hose or gentle pressure wash keeps it fresh.
  • Deal with edge weeds promptly (the surface itself resists them).
  • Don't turn wheels sharply while stationary, especially in heat.
  • A re-dress after some years refreshes the look, far cheaper than replacing resin or paving.

Early days

Expect a few loose chippings in the first weeks as it beds in. Sweep them back or away. This is normal and settles down.
