The best time of year to lay a tar and chip driveway

Tar and chip is laid hot and needs dry conditions, so timing matters more than for some surfaces.

Aim for warm, dry weather

Late spring through early autumn is ideal. Warm ground helps the bitumen bond and the chippings bed in properly, which means fewer loose chips and a longer-lasting finish.

Why winter is trickier

Cold, wet ground stops the binder gripping as it should. It can still be done in milder winter spells, but a good installer will wait for a dry window rather than rush it.

Plan ahead

The good months are the busy months, so it pays to get your quote in early and book a slot. The job itself is usually just a day.
